Revision - Todorov's Narrative Theory

Todorov's Narrative Theory

Todorov (b. 1939, d. 2017) follows a 3-part structure.
  1. Equilibrium - all balanced and peaceful
  2. Disruption - something bad happens and the hero has to sort it out
  3. New Equilibrium - returns to normal and a happy ending
E.g Harry Potter
  1. [Equilibrium] Living his normal life
  2. [Disruption] disruption when he goes to Hogwarts and finds out Voldemort wants to kill him
  3. [New Equilibrium] living normal life at Hogwarts (e.g Christmas and friends)

Todorov's Narrative Theory applied to KOTV

  • disruptions - bats flying everywhere, people lying on the floor/being held by their throats, vampires seem to be fending off bats
  • disruption makes the film poster seem more engaging
Some media products deliberately challenge this theory for many reasons (e.g a villain who was believed to be murdered jumping up from the dead), including engaging you in the next film, leaving you on the edge of your seat.

WHAT EFFECT DOES THE STRUCTURE/CHALLENGED STRUCTURE HAVE ON THE AUDIENCE?
