Black Panther's Marketing Strategy and Regulation of the Film Industry

 Black Panther's Marketing Strategy

Marketing - technique used to advertise a media product
Convergence- coming together of previously separate industries (e.g comic book + film = superhero movie)
Synergy - benefits of convergence; 2 different things which work                      really well together

Black Panther has a LOT of merchandise!

Convergence allows Disney to minimise risk and maximise profit

Regulation of the Film Industry

Regulations are the rules and restrictions that media producers must follow.
The films shown in the UK are regulated by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification).
Mild Peril - a little bit scary
Age certificate system is highly subjective.
12A is only for cinema.

When scenes are taken out of context, it can be very different.
Certain scenes from Hostel 2 were shared on porn websites, but taken out of context which created legal issues.

BBFC operates under the principle that films are able to cause harm or offense through their context. In this sense, it can be seen that the BBFC has a remit to protect audiences.

Context is essential!

  • rise of digitally convergent technology, it is impossible to digitally regulate industries

Example Question
Explore how the film industry is regulated. Make references to Black Panther to support your answer [12]
  • Harm and Offense → fight scene is choreographed, fast paced with little injury detail
    • specific purpose of the battle which is made clear to the audience
    • fantasy violence, no instances of actual trauma or extreme gore
    • a little blood on teeth
  • Imitable Behaviour
  • Context
The film industry in the UK is regulated by the BBFC, a non-governmental regulatory body. The BBFC principally regulated film through reviewing and assigning age certificates. This form of regulation is largely ineffective due to digitally convergent technologies.
